Like clockwork, with the chill of winter settling in, and the hope of longer days months away, our imaginations begin to daydream about escaping to a cozy place. There is something unique and special about a winter weekend away from home, whether it be a romantic getaway or creative retreat, Culver, Indiana is a magical destination to consider.

Winter is a quiet time in Marshall County. The surrounding landscape transforms into a winter wonderland few know about unless they know someone from the area. For many, it's their secret they hold tightly. For others, the desire to share the beauty of spending time in the snow-covered hills overlooking the pristine Lake Maxinkuckee is stronger. We favor the latter, as our family has welcomed guests from all over to enjoy the magic of moonlit nights, incredible star-filled skies, and quiet winter walks to visit our favorite Culver spots.

This time of year, while locals count down to the Annual Culver Winter Fest the first weekend of February, small business owners enjoy a well-earned respite after a busy summer. The long days of patronage from summer Culver Academies families and seasonal lake guests come to a close. Residents, like us, settle in to enjoy the tranquility of the town they call home.

Those who know what a gem this lakeside town is during the calmer months of winter may curse us for sharing! However, that's just it; we believe Culver is a place to share with people who love the sounds of nature and appreciate the solitude of the midwest countryside. We welcome all, whether they come from the city or a faraway place to experience an Indiana winter for themselves.

The shorter days and extended nights is the perfect time of year to be more reflective with yourself and loved ones.

Are you a writer looking for an extended stay with the space to finish developing an essential character in your next book?

Maybe you are feeling disconnected from long-time friends, wishing for a place to come together, revisit old stories of your youthful days, while gathered around under one roof.

Perhaps you and your partner could use a break from the world and all the distractions which come from your busy lives. A quiet night to reconnect and dream of the future - together.

We, of course, invite you to stay at either one of our Airbnbs, located here at Lake Max Meadows. Each offers every amenity one could enjoy, whether it's a group of old college friends, a couple celebrating a milestone anniversary, or a writer looking for a quiet place with an inspiring ambiance. Our property was once a working farm and is now a sprawling landscape with sunrises and sunsets to amuse the creative or set the tone for a magical winter weekend. The colors are rich in hues and dance across the sky.

The natural details of our region in the winter, beckon us to embrace waking up to the late-rising sun or turning in early with a glass of wine as vibrant as the sunset over Lake Maxinkuckee.

So we ask, which will it be? A weekend shared with your closest friends or a solo retreat to recharge your senses and refresh your imagination, or a romantic getaway for two?

The Lake Max Loft offers a small group of family and friends a modern space with cozy comforts all under one roof. Our loft makes it easy to spend the day lounging and cherishing time together. With its state-of-the-art kitchen, you can dine-in or quickly venture into Culver or South Bend for a night out.

Dining Recommendations for Small and Large Groups:

The Studio offers couples and solo travelers just what they need for a night or two. The open layout and natural light make it easy to stay-in, add the finishing touches to a writing project, become lost in a good read, or each other!

Dining Recommendations:

  • Cafe Max Eatery & Tap - A charming location adored by locals for its cozy ambience, delicious quick bites and cocktails.

  • Frida's Mexican Cuisine - One of the beloved eateries of Culver serves up breakfast all day and authentic Mexican cuisine. We recomment the carnitas and margarita!

*If its more of a reunion with your best friends from college you had in mind, we suggest renting out both spaces to accommodate everyone, making use of the open multi-use space in the Big Red Barn, which is home to the loft.
